BOMBARD, was born on 24 November 1884 in Black Brook, NY, USA.¹ He married Media LABOMBARD, daughter of Alfred LABOMBARD and Media DENNETT, on 30 June 1908 in Au Sable Forks, NY, USA.² He died on 10 November 1938 in Black Brook, NY, at the age of 53. One of the saddest accidents to be recorded in this vicinity in many years was the accidental shooting early on Thursday forenoon, November 10, 1938, of George Bombard of Au Sable Forks village, New York, aged about 55 years. The victim of the accident and his nephew, Owen Bombard, were members of a party which had started out that morning in the hope of bringing home a deer. They entered the woods near West Kilns, about fourteen miles from Au Sable Forks, leaving their car at the side of the highway, and had penetrated the forest about a mile and a half when they separated for the purpose of "raising" a deer by hand driving.
About half an hour later Owen, who was standing quietly and alone, saw the brush a short distance from him moving, and in his excitement, convinced that he saw a pair of horns through the brush put his rifle to his shoulder and fired. He ran to the spot where he supposed the animal had fallen and was horrified to see his uncle lying on the ground dead. He fired two shots in rapid succession in the hope of attracting other hunters who were in the party. A moment later he fired the remaining cartridges in the gun and then ran to the road over a mile away and notified passersby of what had occurred. Telephone messages were sent to Au Sable Forks for assistance and to Keeseville notifying the state troopers at that outpost. Quirk Brothers were asked to send their ambulance to the scene of the accident and it dispatched without delay, but it was not until late afternoon that the body was carried out of the woods and taken to Quirk's funeral parlors at Au Sable Forks. The bullet had entered at the left side of the victim's neck and passed entirely through. That Mr. Bombard had been killed instantly was evidenced by the fact that he was still clutching his gun in both hands and his cap was on his head.
The sixteen-year-old nephew was near collapse when the rescue party arrived at the scene of the accident.
Funeral services were held from Holy Name church Saturday morning, November 12, 1938, Rev. J. J. Kelly, the pastor, officiating, at the requiem mass. Interment was in Holy Name cemetery. The bearers were Halsey Nolette, Wilfred Deloria, Arthur Douglass, sr., Eli Sorrell, Lawrence Snow and Ben Betters.
Survivors included his wife, three brothers, Peter, Richard and Mose, and one sister, Mrs. Ambrose Welcome, all of Au Sable Forks.¹ and was buried on 14 November 1938 Holy Name Cemetery in Au Sable Forks, NY.¹
