At the front of the parish register where the marriage between Jean-Baptiste Benjamin Leroux and Hélène Sallé is found the following statement is on the second page. It is simply some interesting facts about this parish that I thought might be of interest. I quoted the French transcription, then below it I did an English translation.

If we assume that the FamilySearch transcription of UK Christenings is correct, Eliza DELLOW was born to Lydia Dellow and christened at Barley, Herts on 12 Jun 1859. No father is named. Barley and Royston are villages hardly two miles apart. She is most likely the Eliza Dellow at Royston 1858 Jun Qtr Vol. 3a 200. She was probably one year old or so when she was baptised.

Upon marriage to John William ABBOTT on 31 May 1884 in St James's, Camberwell, Surrey, Eliza named her father as "Benjamin", described as a "labourer". Unless there were two Benjamins, this is more likely to be her grandfather, who was indeed an "ag lab". My guess, only a guess, is that Eliza was born illegitimate, we may never know who her father is, and it was her grandfather who was named as "father" "Benjamin". I believe her mother to be the Lydia Dellow above. I cannot find any other Lydia Dellow even in the entire Hertfordshire likely to be mothering at this time.

The mother, Lydia Dellow, marries, in Royston, a Thomas STRATTON in 1866 (Sep Qtr Vol 3a 373). She appears on the 1871 census:

Note that Eliza, correctly aged 13 and born in Royston, is now shown as "Eliza Stratton". It is possible that Thomas Stratton was truly her father but I'd suggest it's unlikely. Why didn't they marry earlier when Eliza was conceived?

We cannot take for granted the fact that Eliza's father was "Benjamin". I am quite sure though that her mother was the Lydia as shown above and we can assume therefore that we can pursue the lines through the maternal grandparents. It might be rewarding: it's likely (almost certain) that grandfather ("Benjamin") Dellow was the one who married Mary Simmance in about 1829 and there may be some stuff to find out about these lines. I'm not very knowledgeable about Hertfordshire but I'll come back to this line later.

     Esther Eliza WEBB, was born in February 1877 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England,^1,2,3,4 and was baptized on 26 January 1879 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire.⁴ She married John William ABBOTT, son of John ABBOTT and Martha CURTIS, in April 1896 in Leicester, Leicestershire, England.⁵ She died in May 1929 in Leicester, Leicestershire, at the age of 52.^6,4
