It is apparent there is a problem here, however there seems to be no way to determine the exact date of birth or baptism. Which one is absolutely correct?
Perhaps baptism no. 6 should be used as it was the "first one" registered. Yet this first record indicated that he was born 15 days prior to his baptism, therefore a birth date of 26 Jan was given on this basis. However baptism no. 28 did in fact indicate that he was born 21 Jan. A terrible mistake on the part of the priest, M Pigeon at the time!³

     Joseph CHENE, was born on 28 August 1856 in Derby, VT, USA,^1,2 and was baptized on 28 September 1856 in Sacré-Coeur, Stanstead, QC, Canada. Godparents: Joseph Cahier & Mary Lapine.^1,2 His baptismal name as written in the parish register was Joseph CHENE.¹ He married Kate MERRILL, daughter of George MERRILL and Carolyn DEAN, on 27 September 1875 in Newport, VT, USA.³ As of September 1875, his married name was Josepjh CHANEY³ and was buried in June 1936 at St. Mary's Cemetery in Newport, VT.⁴ He died on 24 June 1936 in Newport, VT, at the age of 79.⁵
