Godparents: Maurice Chrétien & Gisèle Chrétien.1 He married Aline Madeleine Marie CHAINE, daughter of Albert Joseph CHAINE and Yvonne BELLEMARE, on 10 September 1957 in Baie-de-Shawinigan, QC.3,4
Biographical Notes: Born: January 11, 1934 in La Baie Shawinigan, Québec
Party: Liberal Party of Canada
Occupation: Lawyer
The Right Honourable Jean Chretien was elected to office on November 4, 1993. He was Canada's twentieth Prime Minister (4 Nov 1993 to 12 Dec 2003) and this country's eighth Liberal Prime Minister.
Childhood:
Jean Chretien was born in a small paper-mill village in Quebec. He was the eighteen of nineteen children born to Wellie Chretien and Marie Boisvert, and only one of nine that survived infancy. As a boy, he was nicknamed "Ti-Jean" or "Little Jean" because he was so small. In fact, until the age of 14 he was the shortest kid on the block. Being so short greatly affected his self-esteem. Thanks to a growth spurt, however, he quickly went from the shortest to the tallest.
When Jean was 12 years old, he suffered severe frostbite to his face. He had walked to church from his brother's house on one of the coldest days of the year. The strong winds struck the left side of his face the hardest and by the time he arrived at church his cheek was completely numb. No one realized the severity of Jean's frostbite at the time. It wasn't until several months later that a deformity began to appear in the area that had been hit by the cold. It looked as if Jean's mouth had shifted sideways. Apparently, the frostbite had damaged a facial nerve causing permanent muscle paralysis. While the abnormality didn't cause any physical pain, it was very distressing for a boy entering his teen years.
Education:
The first school that Jean attended was Jardin de l'Enfance, a boarding school run by Dominican nuns. His father believed that the demands of boarding school would be good for the young boy who had always been an impossibly stubborn child and was in need of discipline. After Jardin de l'Enfance, Jean attended two other boarding schools, Joliette and St. Joseph's seminary. He received a classical education in mathematics, science, religion, literature, Latin and Greek.
At age 14, Jean became interested in politics and began attending political meetings in Trois- Rivihres. Like his father and grand-father before him, he was a staunch Liberal. After graduating from St. Joseph's, Jean decided to pursue a career in law. He went on to study Law at Laval University in Quebec City where he became active in the campus' Liberal organization.
Political Career:
In 1963 Jean Chretien entered into politics. He was elected to the House of Commons, and re-elected in 1965 representing the constituency of Saint-Maurice-Laflhche. Later that year, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson. He went on to hold a number of key political positions including:
Minister of Natural Resources (1968)
Minister of Indian Affairs and Nothern Development (1968)
President of the Treasury Board (1974)
Minister of Industry,Trade & Commerce (1976)
Minister of Finance (1977)
Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Minister of State for Social Development, and Minister Responsible for Constitutional Negotiations (1980)
Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources (1982)
Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for External Affairs (1984)
In 1990, Jean Chretien was elected Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and became Leader of the Official Opposition in the House of Commons. He was elected Prime Minister of Canada in 1993 following the general election.
Jean Chretien is married to Aline. They have 1 daughter and 2 sons.
Best Remember For...
Jean Chretien is probably best remembered for not fulfilling his election promise to get rid of Canada's Goods and Services Tax (G.S.T.) Instead of abolishing the G.S.T., Chretien now seems to favour replacing it with a Blended Sales Tax.
