Val Gagné is a commemorative name. Originally called Nushka Station, this community was completely decimated by the Matheson Fire in 1916.
Father Wilfred Gagné, the local parish priest, led a group of people out of town to what they thought was safety. Trapped by the flames, all 56 people were asphyxiated. In 1920, Fr. Charles Eugène Thériault of Timmins suggested the name change to honour Father Gagné's effort.
